Freestyles from Guru (RIP) are rare to begin with. There are only a handful that I know of. This one comes courtesy of New York DJ Doo Wop (of the Bounce Squad). The freestyle was recorded around the time Gang Starr’s Hard to Earn was already a classic and Group Home/Jeru were making waves. The freestyle is over the famous Channel Live instrumental to “Mad Izm“.
It’s safe to say the freestyle was featured on a Doo Wop mixtape at some point but I’m not sure. I acquired it through an album pressed by Doo Wop himself “Live Freestyles Volume 1“. There is also a “Volume 2” from 1996 but not sure if there are any after that. Both volumes have extremely dope freestyles from artists like KRS-1, MOP, Raekwon, Mobb Deep, and many more. If you ever see it, pick it up!
